The world is slowly settling down a more normal, some say “new normal”, cadence and some are resuming their old outdoor activities while others choose to remain inside and embrace new ones. In many cases, these activities involve a bit of digital documentation, be it taking still photos and selfies or recording what could be once in a lifetime moments. GoPro has always specialized in the latter, having popularized the small action camera black box. Now it, too, is embracing a slightly new direction, if this box for the HERO 9 Black is any indication.
Launching an action camera these days, one that’s primarily designed for the great outdoors, sounds almost crazy but people have actually become even more expressive during these times, capturing themselves on video and sharing online. Of course, there’s also the rise of video conferencing, a use case that GoPro has recently embraced by allowing its action cams to be used as webcams. If you’ve been keeping up with the leaks, you’ve probably heard that the GoPro HERO 9 Black might have a color front display, too, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
WinFuture got hold of official marketing images for the next action camera and it already holds a ton of clues, starting with the 20MP sensor that could enable 5K video recording in the future. There are also upgrades to GoPro’s software features, like HyperSmooth 3.0, for “gimbal-like” stability, and TimeWarp 3.0. It will support Full HD live streaming and can even be controlled by voice.
One other major upgrade is the battery, which is rated at 1,720 mAh, up from the previous-gen’s 1,220 mAh. There’s also a new dual charging that can juice up two packs at once to minimize your downtime. GoPro will supposedly also throw in a water-resistant bag for free, something users had to buy separately in the past.
With almost all the details, not to mention marketing images, available, it probably shouldn’t be too long before GoPro makes the HERO 9 Black official. Given its annual practice, that should be anytime within the next few weeks even. It will definitely be launching in a very different world from its predecessors and it will be interesting to see how the market will receive a more powerful and more versatile action cam in 2020.

In an extremely densely populated city that’s always building up and tearing down, the overall value in Hong Kong as it seems, is – out with the old, and in with the new.
A local expatriate that feels differently is Tom Grundy. He heads up Hong Wrong blog, a website that helps expats get the lay of Hong Kong’s land through stories and photography on local politics and history. Having lived in Hong Kong for over 7 years now, Tom has added abandoned village hiking to his list of hobbies – many of which are located in the New Territories.
“It’s really rewarding to come across them and photograph them, because they’re obviously very photogenic,” said Tom enthusiastically. “You’ve got nature re-digesting and reclaiming these old buildings.” Along with exploring the outskirts of the city, Tom is also a healthy participant in local issues. He says that Hong Kongers are afraid of being absorbed into Mainland China, and their fears of this imminent future are not unwarranted.
“As we’re getting closer to Mainland China, there’s some concern that all of Hong Kong will just become a part of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis in 2047,” said Grundy. “And those areas are going to be prime real estate and will be developed – which is a shame because there’s something to be said about the history and heritage of these places.” For those villages up in the New Territories that many hikers like Tom regularly explore, its proximity to Mainland China proves to be a constant visual reminder of this fear.
Up in Kuk Po village, which is just by the border to Shenzhen, are semi-abandoned homes. These houses were vacated in the 50’s and the 60’s when the UK offered residents of the New Territories a chance at British citizenship. Mark Sung, one of the villagers in Kuk Po, returned in 2007 in hopes of reclaiming and restoring his ancestral home. Although Mark grew up in Glasgow, Scotland, he was drawn towards rediscovering the rich history of the village he was born in. “It was only until the 80’s when I came back to Hong Kong, and I eventually rediscovered this village and the house that I’m living in now,” remembers Mark.
Apart from growing his own organic fruit in an orchard beside his house, Mark still makes regular trips into Shenzhen by boat to pick up supplies. Living so far north in the New Territories, Mainland China is much closer for Mark than Kowloon. According to Mark, Hong Kong’s absorption into the Mainland is inevitable and unfortunately – local people have no say in the matter.

“The people of Hong Kong, they’ve been fighting to retain their independence, freedoms democratic rights ever since 1997,” said Mark. “The main worry is that Hong Kong will be absorbed into China, and that everything that people treasure about their livelihoods will be ignored – It’s unfolding as we speak.”
For now, due to the efforts of villagers like Mark, the village of Kuk Po remains the way that it used to be – remnants of Hong Kong’s past, frozen in time. Looking forward, there’s no telling how long Hong Kong’s countryside and identity as an independent, Special Administrative Region will remain preserved.

This is an audio slideshow on Bonham Strand, a Hong Kong-based social enterprise and bespoke tailoring company.
Text story:
The Lai Chi Kok-based workshop is unlike the others in Kowloon. Most Hong Kong tailors work out of the cramped quarters tucked away in the infamous Mirador Mansions, in Tsim Sha Tsui’s edgy backpacker zone. However, this 2,000 square-foot workshop is both spacious and modern.
Garment manufacturing, particularly bespoke tailoring, has long been Hong Kong’s global claim to fame. In the past, the city has prided itself on the skill and precision of its master tailors and its ability to produce beautiful hand-cut suits at reasonable price points. While generally unaffected by the factory migrations to China and other South East Asian countries, bespoke tailoring is still an aging trade and there may not be the next generation of craftspeople to step in.
“The issue is that young people are not interested [in garment manufacturing],” says Fong Wai Keung, the lead designer at Bonham Strand of why bespoke tailoring might be an endangered trade. “It takes a long time to nurture a person, and at least three to four years to get them comfortable in a workshop.” According to Fong, knowledge transfer is essential to training new bespoke tailors, but the time it takes to master the craft is a big deterrent. Bonham Strand, also a social enterprise, is hoping to tackle this problem head on by bringing in local marginalized groups such as at-risk youth, rehab patients and new immigrants to participate in apprenticeship programs. Under the tutelage of master tailors and seamstresses, those new to the trade can slowly get up to speed while gaining the confidence of learning a new skill set.
Christina Po, the head of production, is the one tirelessly organising these socially-responsible apprenticeship programs. Through partnering with local charities and rehab centres, Bonham Strand hosts tie-making seminars at their workshop hoping to foster the next generation of talented and passionate bespoke tailors.
“I’ve learned that they want to upgrade themselves and increase their skill levels,” says Christina of these Bonham Strand apprentices. “If we can cooperate with them, as in we’ll cut the fabric while they’ll make the ties, both of us can learn something.”
